LED Street Lights

Labels: , , , ,

Street Lights can be segregated based on the type of bulbs they use. Street light come in different flavors. Below are some of the street lights
  • Incandescent Street Light
  • Fluorescent Street Light
  • Mercury Vapor Street Light
  • High Pressure Sodium (HPS) Street Light
  • LED Street Lamps
  • Solar Street Lamps using LED Lights
We are going to discuss mainly about the LED Street Lights. We all know that most of the street lights produce more heat and less light resulting in huge energy loss. Led lights works in contrast to other lighting systems. It produces more light and less heat, So the energy spent for lighting is more and you get more lumen's per watt (Refer Global Warming and Led Lights ). At the time of writing this article we where able to get 140 lumens per watt, Which is very high when compared to other sources of lights.

Advantages of LED Street Lamps

Led Street Lamps increases night visibility, It is because of
  • Higher color rendering
  • Higher color temperature
  • Increased luminance uniformity
As explained in my previous article the life span of LED is 1,00,000 hours provided the fixture is designed to dissipate the heat produced at the back of LED properly

LED street light if used with right optics will give enough power using very less electricity when compared to conventional street light lamps (Refer LED FAQ's).LED circuit will approach 80% efficiency, which means 80% of the electrical energy is converted to light energy. The remaining 20% is lost as heat energy. But in incandesant bulp 80% of electrical energy is lost as heat

Reduced maintenance costs: Although the cost of LED's are high but the return on invest can be achieved much quicker when compared to other street lights. With other street lights, the true cost of the bulb is the cost of replacing the bulbs and the labor cost and time needed to replace them. This can be eliminated by using LED street lights.

Mercury is not used in the manufacture of LED lights. Also the cost of producing LED with that of CFL is less there by reducing the carbon foot print even at the manufacturing stage.

The carbon foot print can be reduced more than 50% using energy efficient lights like LED. We at Naba Green Energy make three different street lighting products which are replacements for
  1. Replacement for 40 W
  2. Replacement for 70 W
  3. Replacement for 150 W

Advantages of using LED

Labels: , , , , , ,

Using Hi Power LED (Light emitting diode) has lot of advantages. It improves

  • Color perception
  • Visual clarity
  • Productivity
  • Mood

Color Perception:

To understand the color perception let us first discuss in brief about how human eyes are built. Human eyes senses color using combination of rod and cone cells. Cone cells function in bright light detecting colors and Rod cells are better for low light vision. For humans, the visible spectrum ranges approximately from 380 to 740 nm. LED's have excellent color rendering index(Color Rendering is the property of light source that affects color of the object) of more than 90. So LED's can easily improve the color perception.

Visual Clarity:

LED typically have a high correlated color temperature of 5000k-7500k. Lamps with higher Correlated Color Temperature (CCT) values produce greater brightness perception than lamps with lower CCT of the same luminance. The color temperature value of led is equal to sunlight , approximately 6500k. So LED light gives visual clarity when you see an object.

Productivity:

LED lights if designed properly will reduce the eyestrain in work environment. Eyestrain is due to invisible light, flickering lamp and inadequate light. As there are no flickers and color temperature of LED is that of sunlight the strain on the eyes are reduced and thereby increased productivity.

Mood:

LED lights comes in different colors like red, orange, amber, yellow, green, blue and white. Different colors can change the moods of the occupants in the building thereby increasing thinking capacity.

When designing our lights NaBa Green evaluates all the parameter to give you optimum light to reap the benefits.

Global Warming & LED Lights

Labels: , , ,

Global Warming is defined as the increase of the average temperature on Earth. As the Earth is get hotter, disasters like hurricanes, droughts and floods will be frequent as per the research.

As per the research, global warming proportionately increases with increase in green house gases like

  • Carbon dioxide
  • Methane
  • Nitrous oxide

Some of the major cause of global warming is

  • The major source of carbon dioxide is the power plants. These power plants emit large amounts of carbon dioxide produced from burning of fossil fuels for the purpose of electricity generation.
  • About twenty percent of carbon dioxide emitted in the atmosphere comes from burning of gasoline in the engines of the vehicles.
  • Buildings, both commercial and residential represent a larger source of global warming pollution than cars and trucks. Building of these structures requires a lot of fuel to be burnt which emits a large amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
  • Deforestation kills the lungs of the earth

Tips on reducing global warming

Easiest and fast way of reducing the use of electricity is to move to high energy efficient lights like CFL’s. It uses very less energy compared to incandescent bulb. To reduce the power consumption even further we can use LED based lighting.

LED lamps can be used in
  • Office Lighting
  • Shop Lighting
  • Industrial Lighting
  • Hospitality Lighting
Advantages of using LED Lights

  • It lasts Longer than compact fluorescent lamp and much more longer than incandescent lamps.
  • LED are solid state devices, so they do not have filament. They are not damaged as easily as the other type of lamps and can withstand jarring and bumping.
  • They produce very less heat when compared to incandescent lamp. LED produces 3.4 btu’s/hourcompared to incandescent lamp producing 85 btu’s/hour
  • Mercury and Lead Free, No mercury is used in LED’s
  • LED lights are more efficient because it uses less electricity and gives more power. During this time of writing the article LED’s where able to give 140 Lumens per watt when compared to 13.8 Lumens/watt Incandescent lamp.
  • Cost of Ownership for LED is less compared to other lights. A 100-watt Incandescent light bulb uses 101.5 watts of electricity. Over a period 50,000 hours it will use 5,075 kilowatt-hours of electricity in addition to replacing it 50 times with a new bulb. To get the same lumens LED lamp will use 540 kilowatt-hours of electricity. Even though the upfront cost of LED is high but the cost of ownership is less.
  • LED Lamps are best suited for remote areas as it takes up less electricity so it can be used with solar panels replacing generators or running long electric lines.
