LED Tube Light Vs Fluorescent Tube Light

In this Article we will be comparing LED Tube Light and Fluorescent Tube Light by some characteristics. Such as

  • Function
  • Light Output
  • Power Consumption
  • Directivity
  • Life Span
  • Color Temperature & Color Rendering Index
  • Color
Function:

Fluorescent Tube is a gas discharge lamp, that contains gases like Mercury. It produce short wave ultraviolet light that gets transformed into visible light, the inside of the tube has a phosphor lining. Then the 80% of electrical energy is converted into heat energy , 20 % only used for visible light. The energy produced converts into more heat than Led lights.

Light Emitting Diode is a semiconductor diode. It consist of  p-n junction diode, when it is in forward biased the electron  recombine with holes, then it release some energy in the form of photon( visible light). The electrical energy is converted into 80% light energy, remaining 20% being heat energy. LED does not contain mercury. No harmfull chemical (like mercury) are used.

Light Output:

T8 Fluorescent tube lights are available with different kind of rated light output and power consumption.

For example 36 watts  fluorescent lamp, light output (Luminous Flux) is 2000 lumens, so system efficacy is 55 lm/ watt. Rated life is 5,000 hrs. Tube light efficiency comes down with time.

Lux at the ground = 9.18, Lux/watt =0.50

If using Aluminum Reflector, it can reduce 13% of output light. Now the light output is 1566 lumens
Lux at the ground =15.71, Lux/watt =0.43

If using prismatic Refractor, it can reduce 8% of output light. Now the light output is 1656 lumens
Lux at the ground =16.62, Lux/watt = 0.46

As we all know the efficiency is very high for LED Tube Light over the other lights. So the Luminous flux is consistent for rated life and power consumption also should be low.

Power consumption - 16 watts, System Efficacy -123 lumens/watt, So total light output( Luminous Flux) is 2000 lumens. It should be maintained for Rated life(50,000 hrs). Life span is very high for led lights over other lights. Lux at the ground =68.53, lux/watt =4.28

Reflector is not required for LED lights because of Directivity (Beam Angle).so the light output should not be wasted compare than Fluorescent lamp.

Power Consumption:

Normally the Fluorescent lights are available in 36 watt, but it runs using electronic ballast (called solid state ballast) which consume above 12 watts power.

Magnetic Ballast, the stating modes are Programmed stat, instant stat, and rapid start Lamp flicker index is 0.04-0.07; Dimming is not available for this ballast
Hybrid Ballast, the stating mode is rapid stat, Lamp flicker index is 0.04-0.07. Dimming is not available for this ballast.
Instant start Ballast supply a high initial voltage (over 400V for 4 ft Tube) to start the lamp. High voltage is required to initiate the Discharge between unheated electrodes.
Rapid Start Ballast supply 200-300V to start the lamp, which can heating the electrodes to approximately 1470˚F(800˚C). It starts the lamp with brief delay but without flashing. And for the Fluorescent lamp, warm up time is also minimum 5 minutes.

As we all known using LED Tube Light the power Consumption should be very low. And no need to use electronic ballast because it runs by constant current and voltage. We can’t see the flickering in the range of voltage 85-285VAC and Dimming also available for the led lights. LED driver are used in LED Lamp. So LED Tube Light has a potential benefits like quick start compared to Fluorescent Tube Lights.

Directivity:

Beam Angle is very important in every lighting technology. For Fluorescent lamp Beam angle is 360 degree. We can calculate the beam spread only for 270 degree, 90 degree beam angle is wasted

Beam Spread = 48.6 (Recommended pole height is 10 ft)

Led lights are available with variety of Beam Angle, Beam Angle is 120 degree for our Led Tube Light, we can calculate beam spread for 120 degree

Beam Spread = 21.6 (Recommended pole height is 10 ft)

The light output is not wasted in Led Tube Lights compare than Fluorescent Tube Light.

Color:

Fluorescent tube contains mercury gas, which can discharges and emits 65% of light in 254 nm and 10-20% of light in 185 nm. It will emit the yellowish white color. It has a low Color temperature and Color Rendering Index (Color Tempreature-4100 Kelvin, CRI-80)

Led light has a high correlated color temperature of 5500k -7500k. The sunlight has a color temperature of 6500k, so led light is equivalent to the sunlight. And CRI is also very high (above 90). It can emit the cool white color in the spectrum of 380-740 nm. For Humans also the visible spectrum is 380-740 nm.

LED Indoor Lighting

Labels: , , , , ,

We have been discussing about outdoor lighting at length, LED has huge potential for Indoor lighting, which can be characterized by

  1. Efficiency
  2. Color temperature
  3. Rendering
  4. Color
  5. Dimming
  6. Directionality
Few example applications of LED indoor lighting are
  1. Office lighting
  2. Shop lighting
  3. Home improvement lighting
  4. Hospital lighting
Office lighting/Ambient lighting

Office lighting is the general purpose lighting in office . These may include recessed down light, surface mounted ceiling lights, LED Tube lights and table lamps. The LED office lighting not only used for reducing electricity consumption and also used for
  • Improves productivity
  • Increasing mental awareness

Mental Awareness:

The incandescent light affects human in two ways,
  1. Light enables us to see and feel things. Light regulates our body rhythms such as the sleep/wake cycle. Different types and levels of light can affect a person's ability to see clearly, identify people and objects, and drive safely.
  2. It can also increase sleep efficiency of older adults and reduce symptoms of seasonal affective disorder, felt by many people during winter months.

The LED lights will be very bright which helps us to see clearly. So it will be very helpful to human brain and increase the mental awareness. This light will reduce a sleeping efficiency and their laziness.

Productivity:

LED lights can reduce the irritation of the eyes, breakdown of vision, headaches, indigestion etc. These symptoms can be disabling while it certainly reduce worker productivity and  spoiled their health. eyestrain will come from invisible light, flickering lamp and inadequate light. LED lights are energy efficient and it can reduce eyestrain which in turn leads to improved productivity.

Shop Lighting:

Shop lighting with efficient solid state lights using LED will results in better sales while saving money by reducing energy usage and maintenances cost

  1. Sales can be increased in shops by use different colors of led lights…it will increase the sensation of our mood.
  2. LEDs are available in red, orange, amber, yellow, green, blue and  white.
  3. Different lighting condition can change the mood of people of shopping in building. Then LED colour lighting will lead to an improvement in mood , thinking capacity will be increased.

Hospital lighting:

Hospital or health care facilities can use ultra high efficiency led lights with replacement of CFL, HID etc..
The Led lights is not only safe and toxic free which means it does not have mercury toxic content…so it protect us from mercury emission…and this lighting easy on the eye also, LED lights will increase vitamin ‘D’ and decreasing dental decay

VITAMIN ‘D’:
  • Some LEDs are promoted as producing ultra violet (uv) radiation .Its is shorter than the visible lights, in the range from 10nm to 400nm. UV range from 290 to 315nm , it can produce the synthesis of vitamin ‘D’. which is necessary for proper bone development and maintenance. Sufficient vitamin ‘D’ to have eliminated the incidence of bone -related problem.

Reducing dental decay:

  • Lack of phosphorus and vitamin ‘D’ is the chief cause of ‘DENTAL DECAY’ or ‘DENTAL CARIES’. The phosphorus and vitamin ‘D’ are needed in order to prevent tooth decay. Phosphorus is needed in the saliva to enable this secretion to act as buffer solution , keeping enamel ,destroying acid from accumulating. So LED can easily reduce the problem of dental decay.

Light Spread in LED compared to Mercury vapor and High pressure sodium street lights

Labels: , , ,

As discussed in my previous articles LED technology is growing leaps and bounds, we will compare the light throw of street lights. It has many advantages compared to other light technologies such as
  • Even distribution of light from LED street light creates a better environment.
  • Due to even distribution the visibility improves tremendously.
We will compare LED light beam spread and Lux levels with that of high pressure sodium, mercury vapor lamps.

Mercury vapor street lights
Mercury vapor lamp is a gas discharge lamp that uses mercury in an excited state to produce light. For sake of comparison we will use a 60 watts mercury vapor street light, with following features
  • Life span 16,000-24000 Hrs
  • Power consumption -60 watts
  •  Required Beam angle-360, considering pole height of 10 feet,
To calculate beam spread, Beam width = angle x. 018  x distance      =64.8 feet rectangle
In the above scenario, 90 degree beam angle is wasted. We can calculate for 270 degree beam spread only.
Mercury vapor lamp gives 30 lumens per watt, totally flux-1800 lumens
Lux =  foot candle x 10.76(for 10 feet pole height 1fc=100 lumens) =(18 x 10.76) 193.68
Lux/watt = 3.2

High Pressure Sodium street  lights
As we all know sodium vapor lamps cause little light pollution than mercury lamps. It is a high intensity discharge lamp that uses sodium high pressure as the primary light producing element. We will compare 60 watts high pressure sodium vapor street light with following specification

  • Better Life span is 20,000-30,000 hrs compared than mercury lamps
  • Power consumption -60 watts
  • Required Beam angle -360,considering pole height of 10 feet

To calculate beam spread, Beam width = angle x. 018  x distance=64.8 feet rectangle
Based on the 270 degree beam spread as discussed above. 60 lumens per watts, totally flux=3600 lumens

Lux =  foot candle x 10.76(for 10 feet pole height 1fc=100 lumens) =(36 x 10.76) 387.36
Lux/watt =6.4

LED street lights
Coming to led street light,  We all know it can produce more light with less wattage. Below is the calculation. 60 watts led street light is used as replacement of 120 watts high pressure sodium vapor lamp. we will use same 60 watts led street light with following specification

  • Excellent Life span is 60000 hrs
  • Very low  Power consumption -60 watts
  • Beam angle -120 degree
To calculate beam spread, Beam width = angle x. 018 x distance =21.6 feet rectangle
Full beam spread is used in this scenario, because LED gives only light at 120 degrees.
Based on120 lumens per watts, totally flux-7200 lumens.
Lux =  foot candle x 10.76(for 10 feet pole height 1fc=100 lumens)=(72 x 10.76) 774.14
Lux/watt = 12.90

This calculation clearly shows led lamp lux value is twice than high pressure sodium lamp and four times than that of mercury vapor lamp. Mercury vapor lamp puts out bluish light , because it contain some amount of toxic mercury content.  High-pressure sodium lamps produce light from the yellow, red and orange spectrums. The LED based efficient lighting puts out white light because consists of various colors, which undergo varying degrees of refraction and diffusion.

White Shades of Light Emitting Diodes

Labels: , , , , , , , , ,

As we all know Light Emitting Diodes lights are also called as solid state lighting devices with many potential benefits over other lighting such as
  •  No heat radiation from light
  • Dimmable
  • Can create any color without using filters
  • Degree or focus can be changed with or without secondary optics
  • No start up noise or humming noise
White LED lighting is used widely in the commercial sectors like Office, Factories, Hospitals and Hotels etc. The combination of Red, Green and Blue colors is used to make pure white light.

White LED comes in three different shades

1. Warm Whites
2. Cool White
3. Day Light

Warm White

Warm white tend to have slight yellowish tint like that of light in incandescent light bulb. Warm white is often used to replace incandescent clear mini lights. Yellowish tint in warm white enriches the warmness in homes like wood etc. So warm white LED’s are most commonly used in house hold lighting. As the color temperature of the warm white is that of the incandescent light bulbs they are more suitable for bedrooms, hallways and lounges. Color rendering of warm white is low due to addition of several phosphorus thus reducing the chip brightness.

Cool White

Cool White tends to have a bluish tint to the light giving a very cool feel. Cool white is ideal for work areas, kitchens, laundries, workshops and offices because it improves our ability to see the contrasts very easily due to bluer light tint. The color temperature is around 4000K and color rendering index is also high. Cool white is the natural color of LED light.

Day Light

LED can produce the same color as day light which means pure white. The color rendering index is very high and the color temperature is around 6000K equal to that of sunlight. Day light lights can be used in shops and places of entertainment (like malls, multiplex etc) where special effects are needed.

Comparison of Incandescent, CFL and LED Lights

Labels: , , , , , , ,

In this article we are comparing the cost and some of advantages and disadvantages of  LED, Compact Florescent Lamps and Incandescent Lamps.

Incandescent  Vs LED's Lights:

Our high power LED bulbs can save 85% - 90% electricity cost. For example, our 3W and 5W LED bulbs can replace 20W and 40W incandescent bulbs.

CFL and incandescent bulbs:
When compared to incandescent bulbs, compact fluorescent bulbs burn 10 times longer on average. CFLs with an Energy Star rating use less energy, about 75%.

Pros and Cons of CFLs
  • CFLs take longer to get warm and produce a colder light than incandescent bulbs.
  • Manufacturers responded to customers who complained about the low quality of illumination produced by CFLs, by developing a new generation of lights that resemble incandescent light bulbs.
  • A major disadvantage to using CFLs is the mercury found in every bulb. If the bulb breaks, it can be hazardous to everyone in the home if you don't get rid of it properly. Cleaning up a single broken bulb sometimes requires contracting a hazardous materials specialist, and can cost thousands.
Advantages of LED
LED Lights use less wattage (2-10 watts) than CFLs and don't produce much heat. They can be used for 6.8 years continuously before "dying," the equivalent of 60,000 hours. Unlike CFLS, LEDs don't contain mercury, which is a huge advantage. Please visit Advantages of using LED for more information.

Incandescent Light
Incandescent light is a source of electric light that works by a incandescence which mean emitting visible light as a result of being heated.

Efficiency (lumens/watt) - 10-17
Color Rendering Index (CRI) - 98–100
Color Temperature (K) - 2700 –2800

If we use 60 watts bulb a incandescent light will consume.
The Energy usage per annum = 21,900 watts
Electricity cost of 60 watts per annum = Rs 111.56
The life span of incandescent light from 750 to 2500 hrs. We should also add the cost of replacement of the light.

Compact Fluorescent light(CFL)
Compared than incandescent light it produce more visible light , life span also more that is 10,000 hrs
Efficiency (lumens/watt) - 50-70
Color Rendering Index (CRI) - 65-88
Color Temperature (K) - 2700–6500 k

To calculate how much electricity we are consuming by CFL light. If we use 14 watts ,
The energy usage of watts per year = 5110 watts,
Electricity cost of 14 watts per year = Rs  26.04
It contain mercury so manufacturing cost is little more than others also the hidden costs like replacement cost.

LED lights:
The life span of Light Emitting Diode's are longer compared to  CFL & Incandescent lights.
Efficiency (lumens/watt) - above 80
Color Rendering Index (CRI) - greater than 90
Color Temperature (K) –5500-7500 k

To calculate how much electricity we are consuming by  LED lights. If I use 7.5 watts ,
The energy usage of watts per year = 2737.5 watts
Electricity cost of 7.5 watts per year = Rs 13.94
It is amazing to note how much electricity cost can be saved by using LED lights compared than other lighting.

This calculation clearly shows that incandescent bulbs are the most expensive overall. And CFL lights also most cost effective but the biggest drawback is CFL is its mercury content. Mercury pollution is still one of the big problems which can threaten the health of people, fish, and wildlife everywhere, from industrial sites to remote corners of the planet.

It’s time to get away from 100 year old energy-wasting technology and start saving your money and helping to waste less energy. We at NaBa Green take it very seriously when it comes to energy saving.

LED Street Lights

Labels: , , , ,

Street Lights can be segregated based on the type of bulbs they use. Street light come in different flavors. Below are some of the street lights
  • Incandescent Street Light
  • Fluorescent Street Light
  • Mercury Vapor Street Light
  • High Pressure Sodium (HPS) Street Light
  • LED Street Lamps
  • Solar Street Lamps using LED Lights
We are going to discuss mainly about the LED Street Lights. We all know that most of the street lights produce more heat and less light resulting in huge energy loss. Led lights works in contrast to other lighting systems. It produces more light and less heat, So the energy spent for lighting is more and you get more lumen's per watt (Refer Global Warming and Led Lights ). At the time of writing this article we where able to get 140 lumens per watt, Which is very high when compared to other sources of lights.

Advantages of LED Street Lamps

Led Street Lamps increases night visibility, It is because of
  • Higher color rendering
  • Higher color temperature
  • Increased luminance uniformity
As explained in my previous article the life span of LED is 1,00,000 hours provided the fixture is designed to dissipate the heat produced at the back of LED properly

LED street light if used with right optics will give enough power using very less electricity when compared to conventional street light lamps (Refer LED FAQ's).LED circuit will approach 80% efficiency, which means 80% of the electrical energy is converted to light energy. The remaining 20% is lost as heat energy. But in incandesant bulp 80% of electrical energy is lost as heat

Reduced maintenance costs: Although the cost of LED's are high but the return on invest can be achieved much quicker when compared to other street lights. With other street lights, the true cost of the bulb is the cost of replacing the bulbs and the labor cost and time needed to replace them. This can be eliminated by using LED street lights.

Mercury is not used in the manufacture of LED lights. Also the cost of producing LED with that of CFL is less there by reducing the carbon foot print even at the manufacturing stage.

The carbon foot print can be reduced more than 50% using energy efficient lights like LED. We at Naba Green Energy make three different street lighting products which are replacements for
  1. Replacement for 40 W
  2. Replacement for 70 W
  3. Replacement for 150 W

Advantages of using LED

Labels: , , , , , ,

Using Hi Power LED (Light emitting diode) has lot of advantages. It improves

  • Color perception
  • Visual clarity
  • Productivity
  • Mood

Color Perception:

To understand the color perception let us first discuss in brief about how human eyes are built. Human eyes senses color using combination of rod and cone cells. Cone cells function in bright light detecting colors and Rod cells are better for low light vision. For humans, the visible spectrum ranges approximately from 380 to 740 nm. LED's have excellent color rendering index(Color Rendering is the property of light source that affects color of the object) of more than 90. So LED's can easily improve the color perception.

Visual Clarity:

LED typically have a high correlated color temperature of 5000k-7500k. Lamps with higher Correlated Color Temperature (CCT) values produce greater brightness perception than lamps with lower CCT of the same luminance. The color temperature value of led is equal to sunlight , approximately 6500k. So LED light gives visual clarity when you see an object.

Productivity:

LED lights if designed properly will reduce the eyestrain in work environment. Eyestrain is due to invisible light, flickering lamp and inadequate light. As there are no flickers and color temperature of LED is that of sunlight the strain on the eyes are reduced and thereby increased productivity.

Mood:

LED lights comes in different colors like red, orange, amber, yellow, green, blue and white. Different colors can change the moods of the occupants in the building thereby increasing thinking capacity.

When designing our lights NaBa Green evaluates all the parameter to give you optimum light to reap the benefits.

Global Warming & LED Lights

Labels: , , ,

Global Warming is defined as the increase of the average temperature on Earth. As the Earth is get hotter, disasters like hurricanes, droughts and floods will be frequent as per the research.

As per the research, global warming proportionately increases with increase in green house gases like

  • Carbon dioxide
  • Methane
  • Nitrous oxide

Some of the major cause of global warming is

  • The major source of carbon dioxide is the power plants. These power plants emit large amounts of carbon dioxide produced from burning of fossil fuels for the purpose of electricity generation.
  • About twenty percent of carbon dioxide emitted in the atmosphere comes from burning of gasoline in the engines of the vehicles.
  • Buildings, both commercial and residential represent a larger source of global warming pollution than cars and trucks. Building of these structures requires a lot of fuel to be burnt which emits a large amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
  • Deforestation kills the lungs of the earth

Tips on reducing global warming

Easiest and fast way of reducing the use of electricity is to move to high energy efficient lights like CFL’s. It uses very less energy compared to incandescent bulb. To reduce the power consumption even further we can use LED based lighting.

LED lamps can be used in
  • Office Lighting
  • Shop Lighting
  • Industrial Lighting
  • Hospitality Lighting
Advantages of using LED Lights

  • It lasts Longer than compact fluorescent lamp and much more longer than incandescent lamps.
  • LED are solid state devices, so they do not have filament. They are not damaged as easily as the other type of lamps and can withstand jarring and bumping.
  • They produce very less heat when compared to incandescent lamp. LED produces 3.4 btu’s/hourcompared to incandescent lamp producing 85 btu’s/hour
  • Mercury and Lead Free, No mercury is used in LED’s
  • LED lights are more efficient because it uses less electricity and gives more power. During this time of writing the article LED’s where able to give 140 Lumens per watt when compared to 13.8 Lumens/watt Incandescent lamp.
  • Cost of Ownership for LED is less compared to other lights. A 100-watt Incandescent light bulb uses 101.5 watts of electricity. Over a period 50,000 hours it will use 5,075 kilowatt-hours of electricity in addition to replacing it 50 times with a new bulb. To get the same lumens LED lamp will use 540 kilowatt-hours of electricity. Even though the upfront cost of LED is high but the cost of ownership is less.
  • LED Lamps are best suited for remote areas as it takes up less electricity so it can be used with solar panels replacing generators or running long electric lines.
