Comparison of Incandescent, CFL and LED Lights

Labels: , , , , , , ,

In this article we are comparing the cost and some of advantages and disadvantages of  LED, Compact Florescent Lamps and Incandescent Lamps.

Incandescent  Vs LED's Lights:

Our high power LED bulbs can save 85% - 90% electricity cost. For example, our 3W and 5W LED bulbs can replace 20W and 40W incandescent bulbs.

CFL and incandescent bulbs:
When compared to incandescent bulbs, compact fluorescent bulbs burn 10 times longer on average. CFLs with an Energy Star rating use less energy, about 75%.

Pros and Cons of CFLs
  • CFLs take longer to get warm and produce a colder light than incandescent bulbs.
  • Manufacturers responded to customers who complained about the low quality of illumination produced by CFLs, by developing a new generation of lights that resemble incandescent light bulbs.
  • A major disadvantage to using CFLs is the mercury found in every bulb. If the bulb breaks, it can be hazardous to everyone in the home if you don't get rid of it properly. Cleaning up a single broken bulb sometimes requires contracting a hazardous materials specialist, and can cost thousands.
Advantages of LED
LED Lights use less wattage (2-10 watts) than CFLs and don't produce much heat. They can be used for 6.8 years continuously before "dying," the equivalent of 60,000 hours. Unlike CFLS, LEDs don't contain mercury, which is a huge advantage. Please visit Advantages of using LED for more information.

Incandescent Light
Incandescent light is a source of electric light that works by a incandescence which mean emitting visible light as a result of being heated.

Efficiency (lumens/watt) - 10-17
Color Rendering Index (CRI) - 98–100
Color Temperature (K) - 2700 –2800

If we use 60 watts bulb a incandescent light will consume.
The Energy usage per annum = 21,900 watts
Electricity cost of 60 watts per annum = Rs 111.56
The life span of incandescent light from 750 to 2500 hrs. We should also add the cost of replacement of the light.

Compact Fluorescent light(CFL)
Compared than incandescent light it produce more visible light , life span also more that is 10,000 hrs
Efficiency (lumens/watt) - 50-70
Color Rendering Index (CRI) - 65-88
Color Temperature (K) - 2700–6500 k

To calculate how much electricity we are consuming by CFL light. If we use 14 watts ,
The energy usage of watts per year = 5110 watts,
Electricity cost of 14 watts per year = Rs  26.04
It contain mercury so manufacturing cost is little more than others also the hidden costs like replacement cost.

LED lights:
The life span of Light Emitting Diode's are longer compared to  CFL & Incandescent lights.
Efficiency (lumens/watt) - above 80
Color Rendering Index (CRI) - greater than 90
Color Temperature (K) –5500-7500 k

To calculate how much electricity we are consuming by  LED lights. If I use 7.5 watts ,
The energy usage of watts per year = 2737.5 watts
Electricity cost of 7.5 watts per year = Rs 13.94
It is amazing to note how much electricity cost can be saved by using LED lights compared than other lighting.

This calculation clearly shows that incandescent bulbs are the most expensive overall. And CFL lights also most cost effective but the biggest drawback is CFL is its mercury content. Mercury pollution is still one of the big problems which can threaten the health of people, fish, and wildlife everywhere, from industrial sites to remote corners of the planet.

It’s time to get away from 100 year old energy-wasting technology and start saving your money and helping to waste less energy. We at NaBa Green take it very seriously when it comes to energy saving.
